Choti Diwali (North India) or Naraka Chaturdasi (South India) is followed on the next day of Dhanteras. It is believed that god Krishna or goddess kali has destroyed the demon on this day.

Even the effigies of demons are burnt across in Goa as a part of the celebration.

Followed by Choti Diwali comes the main day of Diwali. It is believed that the divine Lord Rama came back with his wife Sita and younger brother Laxman on this day to his kingdom.

He was sent for ‘vanvasa’ for 14 years, which he completed this day and killed demon Lanka’s, King Ravana. People lit ‘diyas’ to welcome him as it was a day of ‘amavas’/no moon.Since then, the tradition of Diwali incepted and people use lamps, diyas, and fireworks to light up their houses.

Gambling is enjoyed as customary on the day of Diwali and considered auspicious. People throw lavish gambling parties and it is a way to take a break from their hectic schedules and spend some time with their friends and family.

Beautiful rangolis are made in the courtyard and front doors to welcome the goddess Laxmi. People decorate their houses with garlands, lamps, and other decorative materials as well. Fireworks and crackers are burnt at night. People distribute traditional sweets and gifts to their loved ones to mark the celebration of Diwali.
